Food is a highly sensitive topic, as our health and well-being depend on its quality and safety. Food production demands precise planning and maximum efficiency: It is imperative to use a limited amount of resources, avoid shortage or overproduction, have the lowest possible impact on the environment and at the same time operate economically. The challenges are complex and appear to be tailor-made for the application of intelligent digital technologies. The research partnership smartFoodTechnologyOWL is working on these issues: Together with around 40 small and major regional partners from the industry, craft sector, trade and other research institutions, the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts (OWL UAS) is developing innovative products and technologies for the food industry. By bringing together the competences of Industry 4.0 and the university’s as well as partner‘s know-how of food technology, a competence centre on the subject of „Where Food meets IT“ is in the process of development.
smartFoodTechnologyOWL is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the program „Forschung an Fachhochschulen: FH-Impuls“ over the period January 2017 to December 2020. Additionally, the smartFoodTechnologyOWL-initiative is funded financially by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Ministry for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia supports the initiative with an additional 280.000€ during the time of its development state of four years until 2020.
